ProMiMiC – Professional Excellence in Meaningful Music in Healthcare

The ProMiMiC research project (2019-2023) investigated the application of person-centered live music in a hospital setting. This international project is the follow-up to a major pioneering research project from the Netherlands: Meaningful Music in Healthcare (MiMiC). This innovative artistic practice involves musicians improvising person-centered music for patients on various hospital wards.

Since the MiMiC research (Smilde et al., 2019) has shown that positive effects can be observed not only in patients but also in ward staff, this practice has now been further developed in the follow-up project ProMiMiC at four locations: Groningen , The Hague , London and Vienna .

Health promotion through interprofessionality was now the focus of the follow-up research ProMiMiC, funded by the Taskforce for Applied Research (SIA).

The mutual learning processes and collaboration between different professional groups in the hospital context were researched. In Vienna, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts, in cooperation with the Vienna General Hospital / Medical University of Vienna, investigated the interprofessionalism between musicians and music therapists using qualitative research methods.
